A homeless man seeking warmth in a St. Paul garage died Wednesday when the structure caught fire, marking the city’s third fire death this year — all under the similar circumstances. All three victims died in detached garages.

The detached garage at a home on the 1400 block of Mayre Street was fully engulfed when crews arrived just before 9:30 p.m., the St. Paul Fire Department said.

Crews were called to a report of a fire in a detached garage where firefighters found a deceased victim. The city averages two to three fire fatalities a year, a number that’s been reached already this year.
